Unexpectedly, Evil Dead Rise’s main villain is just as popular and mesmerizing as the hero on-screen. Cronin puts the future of the franchise in great hands with Lily Sullivan’s Beth, who ends Evil Dead Rise as a new kick-ass Final Girl and worthy chainsaw-wielding protagonist. Most great modern horror movies are lucky to emerge with one iconic character, but Evil Dead Rise has two. Alongside Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams, whose lines like “ Groovy,” “ Hail to the king, baby,” and “ This… is my Boomstick!” are horror classics, the unexpected and brutal remarks of Alyssa Sutherland’s Ellie are difficult to forget after Evil Dead Rise’s ending. Deadites throw horrible insults and say disturbing things that people would normally keep inside, but the words that leave possessed Ellie’s mouth are far more shocking than the franchise’s past Deadites.įrom “ Mommy’s with the maggots now” to the hilarious way that Sutherland says “ Open up, now” through the peephole, and every disgusting and demented line in between, Evil Dead Rise’s villain is racking up some of the franchise’s most unforgettable quotes. Like M3GAN, whose dancing and singing throughout her kill spree separate her as a certified horror icon, Ellie stands above the rest with her terrifying and hilarious one-liners in Evil Dead Rise. Of course, the heart of the scary battle for the best 2023 horror villain is the memorable comedy that accompanies them. Human Ellie and Deadite Ellie are both incredibly compelling characters, with each enhancing the other as the personal nuances of the rampage become more deranged and spiral further out of control. Even compared to other horror villains, Evil Dead Rise establishing Ellie as an authentic loving mother and caretaker beforehand makes her turn far more effective than in a hit like M3GAN, as the robot never had humanity to begin with. Ellie also gets extremely personal with the insults she hurls toward Beth in regard to her profession, sexuality, and capabilities as a soon-to-be mother, which Evil Dead Rise establishes are based on resentments or grudges she held against her before death.ĭemons from past Evil Dead movies certainly dug deep into the characters’ personal lives, but Evil Dead Rise takes Deadite Ellie to the next level by still making her bizarre insults realistic to her humanity. After the possessed Ellie disturbingly makes eggs and begins vomiting on the floor, she puts Beth in charge of her children and urges her to not let the demon take her babies. The real Ellie also makes her way through in a few key moments, which is far different from past possessions in the Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead Rise actually makes her a greatly sympathetic protagonist for her first few scenes in the movie, particularly through her humorous interactions with her kids, complicated relationship with the always-moving Beth, and unfortunate circumstances of her apartment building being condemned shortly after her husband left her to raise their kids alone. The key to making Ellie such a compelling villain in the brutally gory Evil Dead Rise is the humanity given to her beforehand, as Lee Cronin’s film quickly establishes her loving yet sarcastic caretaker role within her family – both to her three children and her sister Beth. In fact, unless The Exorcist reboot or Five Nights at Freddy's can present more thrilling antagonists, it’s unlikely that any upcoming 2023 horror villain will be able to beat the legendary and exhilarating performance of Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie in Evil Dead Rise. The other notable villains include Cocaine Bear’s titular mama bear and Nicolas Cage’s campy Dracula in Renfield, who still fail to reach the chaotic energy and gory fervor of Evil Dead Rise’s Ellie. Ellie’s greatest competition for 2023 horror villain queen is the robotic M3GAN, whose PG-13 rampage is accompanied by a similar number of hilarious and iconic one-liners. In addition to Evil Dead Rise character Ellie, 2023’s horror slate has already unleashed some great villains that will go down as iconic evils. With stellar reviews and a record-breaking box office performance, Evil Dead Rise is a unique triumph among the slate of modern horror reboots, with its icon-in-the-making approach to the main villain and emotional beats helping it stand out within its own franchise and the larger lexicon of fun horror flicks. The fifth movie in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise modernizes the lore and themes while progressing the larger story through new final girl Beth (Lily Sullivan) and her older sister Ellie (Sutherland), whose Deadite possession launches a demented rampage against her own children. WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Evil Dead Rise! Evil Dead Rise has introduced a new horror icon with Alyssa Sutherland’s Ellie, whose hilariously terrifying Deadite transformation beats 2023’s other horror movie villains thus far.
